BIOGRAPHY 2020
As an undergraduate I studied ceramic sculpture and I continued to express myself through clay for many years. I threw and hand built vessel after vessel but I wanted more color on the surface of my sculpture. I loved the work of Peter Voulkos who is best known for his abstract expressionist Interpretation of ceramic sculpture. While visiting Betty Woodmans’ ceramic studio in Italy I was struck by her use of bright color and bold gestural marks.
I began experimenting with paint instead of glazes in an effort to achieve the pallet and powerful marks I desired. One day, frustrated and burned out by this process, I started throwing fist full of clay at a huge white wall in the studio. The process turned into vibrant splatters of paint over gobs of clay. This became the nexus of my work as I cast India ink, oil paints, and a multitude of other supplies onto the wall. I became lost in this new medium- rubbing, brushing and creating. Canvas is now my focus . I am currently a full-time artist and have a studio in Easthampton, MA.
